Isla Carroll wins the The USPA Silver Cup
Posted On: March 27, 2009

2006 finals game played March 25, 2007 at International Polo Club Palm Beach

HOUSTON – John Goodman and his team Isla Carroll won the finals game of the 106-year old United States Polo Association (USPA) Silver Cup. The finals of the 2006 tournament, originally scheduled for October 22, 2006 but postponed due to wet weather, took place on Sunday, March 25, 2007 at International Polo Club Palm Beach in Wellington, Florida.

With a great crowd on hand, including a number of the Houston Polo Club players and members along with representatives of Houston’s Curing Children’s Cancer Fund, the two teams competing for the coveted cup were Team Lockton/Stanford and Isla Carroll. The line-up of Team Lockton/Stanford included co-patrons Jay Comeaux (A) and Tim Kelly (A), Brandon Phillips (5), Roberto Gonzalez (6) and Todd Offen (5). For Isla Carroll John Goodman (1) assembled his team with Sugar Erskine (7), Silvestre Donovan (7) and
Carlitos Galindo (1).

And an exciting finals match it would be. Each squad got on the board early. Todd Offen opened the scoring while Donovan countered right back with a score. As the first chukker ended, Gonzalez put one through as the clock wound down giving Lockton/Stanford an early 2-1 lead. The second chukker was highlighted by the play of Stanford’s Comeaux as he executed a near perfect run from the throw-in to take down to the 20 yard line. The remainder the first half was marked by balanced play and good teamwork on both sides, Jay completing his playing time with the score tied 5-5.

As Tim Kelly took over for Lockton/Stanford, Sugar took control for Isla Carroll, scoring five times in the 4th. Lockton/Stanford, playing under the inspired leadership of Roberto Gonzalez fought back to within one at 11-10, and with 30 seconds left in the match, made one last run. Todd Offen, double teamed, made a incredible pass to get the ball to Roberto within 2 yards of goal, but his shot was just wide as the final bell sounded.

So, while it was a memorable day for Messer’s Comeaux and Kelly (also playing in his first USPA Silver Cup Final), the Trophy, presented by Jay, went home again for the third time with John Goodman and Team Isla Carroll. Goodman was also the recipient of the Robert Uihlein Trophy for the Most Valuable Patron in the tournament, presented by David Yurman’s Lily Paxson. Runner up awards were presented to the Stanford/Lockton team by Paul Vitagliano of Bombardier.

MVP Sugar Erskine received the Catena timepiece, presented by Maggie Ferguson with Carroll Goodman and Zoo Anne Dyer on behalf of the Curing Children’s Cancer Fund, and the Ray Harrington Trophy, presented by Charles Smith, as the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament. Amber Owen then presented the USPA’s Best Playing Pony award to Erskine’s horse Milos.
